Eyewear designer Tom Davis has once again teamed up with Warner Bros. Discovery to create frames for the upcoming film Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet. Inspired by Wonka himself, Davis created gold business cards and craft glasses from unusual materials such as crushed meteorites, and he spent more than a decade creating custom frames for the protagonists of many Hollywood films.
Davis has successfully collaborated with Warner Bros. on numerous occasions, including reinterpreting the iconic frame for 2021′s The Matrix Resurrected and designing Clark Kent’s glasses, just like Henry Cavill’s in the 2016 classic Superman As worn in Batman v: Dawn of Justice. Warner Bros. recently announced an exclusive partnership to create a limited-edition series of exclusive frames inspired by six of his favorite Warner Bros. films to celebrate the legendary studio’s 100th anniversary.
For Wonka, Davis was asked to create two custom picture frames – one for Matthew Baynton’s character Fickell Gruber and the other for Abacus, played by Jim Carter. For Fickellgruber, the character wore a lot of green and was Wonka’s nemesis. Tom designed the frame to have a classic period-appropriate shape, which was the pinnacle of fashion at the time. At that time, only well-dressed and successful people could afford such picture frames. Davis also added a green tint to the shots, hinting at the character’s mystique.
In “Abacus,” the character wears glasses from 50 years ago. Since he’s down on his luck throughout the movie, he can’t really afford new glasses, so the frames are designed to be very specific. It needed to be placed on the end of his nose, and also for Jim Carter to use during filming. When creating frames for the film, the costume department needed five pairs, and it was nearly impossible to find something so vintage for an actor that would fit equally perfectly. Customization was the only option, and in fact, this was the frame Davis was originally asked to make for the studio.

To celebrate the release of Warner Bros. Pictures’ big-screen holiday spectacle Wonka, Davis has teamed up with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products to design a series of seven Wonka-inspired frames that will be available in December through his Catch London brand launched. Each frame has a unique or bizarre characteristic, befitting both the film itself and Davis’ own reputation for weird and wonderful creativity: some smell like giraffe milk, some glow in the dark, and others Changes color the moment the wearer steps out.
Tom Davis said: “I was very excited when Warner Bros. Discovery asked me to be a part of this project. Growing up, I loved the stories of Roald Dahl and always dreamed of running my own factory. I have been inspired by this since I was a child. Inspired by Willy Wonka, now starting to design the framework for Wonka feels like the realization of a childhood ambition.

“But it also gave me lots of ideas for wild and quirky ways to create this new range of Catch London frames. Who thought the world needed glasses that not only looked amazing, but smelled like giraffe milk ?Well now it is, they are amazing. I can’t wait for people to wear them and smell them of course!”
